"Understanding Media, 30 Years of Recursive Video" is a retrospective of
video pieces made since 1974 by Dick Ford.
The theme of 'recursion' or
'self-reference' is woven throughout all the pieces which are tied
together by recursive
subtitled commentary which add clarity, confusion,
and humor to the mix. The first segment is from a 1974 sociology project
about Marshall McLuhan where McLuhan's concepts about media are
illustrated using primitive black and white video.
Next is a colorful
abstract video art and a self-referential self-interview by and with the
filmmaker from a 1984
one man museum video show. Film reviewer Anita Modak-Truran of the Jackson, MS, Clarion Ledger, selected
this video as one of her favorites in the Crossroads Film Festival, calling it, "an explosion of innovative experimentation."
