July 2003 paintings on 4x4'
panels
Here is a set of large paintings done mostly in one busily productive
weekend. The surface is raw paper pulp made by Georgia Pacific in New Augusta,
MS; they give away the imperfect runs when they switch between pine and
hardwood papermaking. I mount the pulp on wood panels. The medium used
is mainly oil sticks with some oil pastels, conte, chalk, and whatnot.
The structure inside the square format is scribed with an awl to determine
where elements of the faces are located in the designs. It may have something
to do with assuming the turbulent balance of chaos and order, or noise
and information, within the universe has an underlying structure.

The Friday before the series of large paintings began, I was watching and my son Adam swimming in a pool with some kids from church. I painted them with my little watercolor kit from Windsor Newton.
These two Crucifixions are from a series done in the early 1980's.
