Dick Ford Animations Dick Ford (left) and assistant Mike Jackson. The following is an extract from an article titled "The South Production Report" in Markee Magazine's December 2001 issue, written by Mark R. Smith. The photo above illustrates the article.
Ford's work is "mainly corporate, mostly medical illustration," with other animations and spots. "Hospitals still use VHS, but when they make the transition to DVD, we will," he says. Some of Ford's corporate clients are national, like Johnson & Johnson, and often key on hospital products. "The medical clients like my work, since I tone it down and don't make sensitive titles look disturbing or awkward," says Ford who returned from Germany to start the business in his native Mississippi in 1994. He's worked in New Orleans and Mobile and had interns hired by Industrial Light & Magic, Disney and the Mississippi Film Commission. "That's kinda fun," he notes. His market is mostly outside Jackson, although he stresses that
there's a strong local community. Lately he's seen customers veer towards
the Web. "Because I do animation, people have asked me to do electronic
graphics as well," he says. Ford's graphics have also showed [sic] up in
a spot boosting Amtrak's Southern Crescent service from New York to New
Orleans.
Mark Twain said that when the local newspaper writes a story about you, you can go over the printed result with a divining rod and never find yourself, so it is no surprise to me to be misquoted. Magazines have to find something to fill up those blank pages every month. My boy Adam was surprised and delighted to see my picture in a national magazine. |
